The school council is made up of a group of pupils from each year group who represent their year with ideas, suggestions and problems or concerns. We have a system where the pupils work once every other week with a member of staff (Laura Latham) to speak their ideas and views and to share thoughts and points. Each term a new representative is elected to represent their year group. The only two people who stay in the school council for the whole of the year are the chair and secretary. (Lily Holloway and Alice Tebbit) The chairs responsibilities include: holding the weeks meeting, organising events and speaking the main points for the week. The secretaries responsibilities include: writing the weeks minuets, writing letters and helping organise events. We have had feedback saying that the idea of the ‘school council’ works well, gives opportunities to younger pupils and frees more pathways to life in future.
The Eco Council is a group of four children (two year 6s and two year 5s) who are up to the big responsibility of helping our school to become an eco friendly community. These responsibilities consist of: feeding the birds when they need it, emptying the green bins, promptly reminding people to turn lights off, turn taps off and shut doors!
What we also do as a group is read the electricity meters once a month and check they are not going up too high! As well we help out with the yearly RSPB bird watch – a well looked forward to event by the eco members! What we do is count the birds spotted in the school grounds and draw tallies for each one we see. Another responsibility is doing litter picks when the school is getting messy!
As a group we meet at least once a term with Mrs Beavis, Mrs Neale and Mrs Dawson to discuss things about our school’s eco status. Once a week in assembly we stand at the front and display the results of each class’s eco points. When people turn off the taps or the lights and shut doors they can put an eco point up. At the end of each week we collect them up and show who the most eco friendly class is. We are in our third green flag – next summer we will hopefully get our fourth!...
