Church Links
Great Wilbraham Church of England School relates mainly to St. Nicholas Church, the parish church of Great Wilbraham which is situated directly opposite the school but it also has good links with St. John’s Church, Little Wilbraham (less than a mile away) and with St. Vigor’s Church in Fulbourn since the parishes are closely linked and the ministers serve all three parishes.
In addition, our Vicar is one of the Governors of the school and is committed to making sure children are heard as well as seen at church.
As a Church of England (controlled) school we are proud of the school’s Christian ethos and the school and Church work well together and enjoy a very good relationship. In practice there are currently ten components to this relationship:
- There are regular acts of collective worship, often taken by the local clergy and members of the church, at the school.
- A termly service for the whole school is held at St. Nicholas Church to celebrate Christmas, Easter and the end of the school year.
- A presentation of a Bible from the church to all those moving up from Key Stage 1 to 2 is made in July each year.
- A presentation of a book from the church to all those moving on to Secondary School is made annually at the Leaver’s Service.
- A fortnightly ‘Happy/Sad’ Club is run jointly by the Curate and a Teacher.
- A monthly Sunday Afternoon All Age Service is held at the School (Xpression!) for the whole community.
- The Vicar and two other members of the Church act as Foundation Governors.
- A weekly lunchtime club for the children has recently started, run by local church members called ‘Xplore!’
- Occasional visits by the clergy are made to take lessons on RE topics such as baptism.
- Occasional church meetings are held in the school hall in the evenings.
