Newsletter January 2012

Welcome back, I hope you all had a good Christmas.

This term our topic is Pirates and Explorers and we will be visiting the Scott Polar Museum in Cambridge.

As the weather is still very unpredictable please ensure your child has suitable clothing to keep them warm and dry. Hats, scarves, gloves and coats should all have your child’s name clearly labelled. Please make sure your child has a change of shoes and a coat with a hood at school at all times.

Also please can you make sure that your child brings in a named water bottle for the classroom.

Dragon class has P.E. on a Monday afternoon with Pegasus, so please can you ensure your child has the correct clothes and shoes on a Monday for P.E. This term we will be having some of the sessions in the hall as we are focusing on dance and gymnastics so all children will need shorts and a T shirt for this. However some lessons outside will be outside unless it is raining, so please make sure your child has tracksuit bottoms, a spare jumper, socks and trainers. If your child has long hair then please make sure it is tied back on a Monday. Please can you check that your child’s clothes are clearly labelled as this makes it easier when they all get changed.

This term on Wednesday’s (starting next week) Pegasus class will join with Dragon class for the morning sessions. If you have any questions or concerns about this please feel free to come and talk to me or email me.

If any parents or carers would be willing to come in and help with readers on a regular basis, this could be in the morning or afternoon please could you let myself or Mrs Crisp in the office know as soon as possible. It is fine if you can only do alternate weeks. Any help would be fantastic.

TOPIC HOMEWORK - Wilbrahams Past and Present January 2012

  1. We will be looking at houses in the village and using their features to decide roughly how old they are. Please could you either take a photograph, or sketch a building from the local area and if possible, find out roughly when it was built. You could choose your own house (and we do need modern buildings as well as older ones), or another building in the village that you find interesting. You are welcome to email photographs to me if you can’t print at home.
  2. Draw a map of your route to school. Draw on local landmarks etc. If you live in further away villages, you could do a map of your route to the local village shop, church or other landmark. Draw the maps in pencil and remember to label everything.
  3. Pubs were an important part of village life in the past and most villages had more than one. Find out what the pub/s in your village are called, and see if you can find out about pubs that no longer exist. Think about the pub names and why they have those names. What does it tell you about the history of the village and the jobs people had. You could take photographs or draw the pubs as well as writing about what you have found. (If you are allowed in one, you might see photographs on the walls of different parts of the village from many years ago. )
  4. This is a two week piece of homework: If you were going to design a village, what would it contain? Think about the buildings and services you would include, how would you arrange the houses and roads around the services? Draw your village map as carefully as you can (remembering the importance of presentation). As this is a two week project, it needs twice as much work as the other pieces!
