Motorbike Madness

On Thursday 12th January our quite school was woken up by the sound of two motorbikes. As part of Pegasus' Transport topic we were lucky enough to have two motorbikers bring their motorbikes into the playground to talk to the children about them. Pegasus class all sketched the motorbikes and even had a go sitting on the motorbikes. We asked them lots of questions and found out lots of information about motorbikes.

Maths Week

Last week was jam-packed with adults coming into school to tell us about how they use maths in their job. Here is the timetable for the events:

Monday:   Frank Coen (courier) and Emma Adam       (architect)

Tuesday:   Brian Horsefield (farmer) and Nigel Wathen (financial planner)

Wednesday:   Andrew Walker (ICT) and Hugh Bateman (Examinations Board)

Thursday:   Dave Humphrey (Communications/Surveillance)

Friday: Michelle Brace (project manager), Matt Gardener (medical researcher), Sarah and Neil (Barclays Bank) and Cathy Marx (occupational therapist)

That’s eleven visitors! All were very interesting and we learnt and did a lot. For instance, we took tests, watched clips of tapes, we made viruses and antibodies, and we calculated complicated sums! All in all we definitely realised just how much maths grown-ups use in their jobs!

Prize Pupils 2011

Jupiter Class 5p Challenge

Over the past term, Jupiter Class have been collecting 5p coins with the aim of finding out how long a line of 5p coins we could make. In maths lessons we worked out different ways of estimating how much money we had based on the weight of one coin and the weight of the whole coin collection. We used spreadsheets to work out how long our line would stretch based on the diameter of one coin. We finally counted up how much money we collected using increasingly efficient methods. Just before we laid the coins out on the playground, we challenged ourselves to see who could build the highest tower of 5 pence coins. This was much harder than it looked! The winning tower was 11.5cm high. Our line of coins reached exactly half way around the netball court - 33 metres in total! The whole school came to admire our efforts. The best thing is that we collected £78.30 which we will spend on new novels for the classroom.

Cambridgeshire's Year 5 Maths Challenge

A team of four children took part in the Year 5 maths challenge, initially attending the heats at Burwell Village College. They did so well that they earned a place in the final, held at Duxford Air Museum. Although they did not win, Mrs Latham was very proud of their achievement - only 29 schools out of the 120 schools that entered made the final! The following report is by Veronica Batemen.

The Year 5 mathematics challenge that Eleanor Jenkinson, William Beeton, Catherine Humphrey and I, Veronica Bateman went to on the 7th July 2011 was a fun event for doing the maths final.
The heats: The Team Round, The Puzzle Relay and the Museum Round were the right level of difficulty for us Year 5s yet we struggled with puzzle relay.
 Our team were put into a group with other teams (to split up the large amount of people that came).
The Team Round had a series of questions that we had to answer and personally I think our school team did well on that! In the Puzzle Relay one pupil from each school team went up to a desk and collected a sheet that, of course, had puzzles on them. The pupil, aka the runner, then brought it back and put it in a marking box. There were ten sheets and Great Wilbraham completed seven! Finally the Museum Round. Again we had laminated cards for each school and we answered questions on them in two groups of two by going round the room in the museum finding the solution to the problems on information boards.
 But naturally, at the end we were rewarded with biscuits Catherine's mum brought.
Unfortunately we do not know what place we came in!

Sports Morning

On Thursday 30th June Mrs Bye and Miss Newington with the help of the year 6's planned a sports morning. There was lots of different stations and the children got to practice lots of new skills and some children tried activities for the first time. They moved around each station with the year 6 children demonstrating the activity. Luckily the weather held out and we had a very enjoyable morning.

Teddy Bears Picnic

On Thursday 7th July Pluto class and Pre-School had a teddy bears picnic. Once we had all had our snack with our teddies we played some games with the parachute including mushroom, swapping places and bouncing our teddy bears. Everyone had a very enjoyable time.

School sleep over 2011

The school sleep over was a great success and a lot of people went.
It was very fun and we watched a few films, had a treasure hunt, had a few competitions and had a lot of fun. We played lots of games of octopus and we played with the teachers. We had to go to bed at a good time; everyone had a lot of fun. For breakfast there was a wide selection of cereal and toast with jam or marmite.
We watched a few TV shows in the morning after breakfast which everyone hopes it happens again.

Open day was a great success and the rain held off!

Book Day

Friday 24th June was an amazing book day! Everyone came dressed as their favourite book, fairy tale or nursery rhyme character – there was a book prize for the best costume in each class. Even teh adults joined in.

In the morning, local author Jon Bridgeman visited the school and talked to us about his recently published book.

Wilbraham Warriors

Congratulations to Molly, Josh, Tom, Anthony, Sam and Ollie, who played in the Wilbraham Warriors football team that took part in this year's 'Friendship festival' tournament in Caronno, Italy. It was the fifth consecutive year that the Warriors have sent a team to the tournament, and the children played very well, finishing third in their age group. Special congratulations to Ollie, whose wonder goal will long stick in the memory!

Netball Finals - Netherhall, 17th May 2011 Report

Great Wilbraham Primary School’s netball team qualified for a place in the county finals, which were held at Netherhall school on the 17th May.

The people in our team were; Eliot, Joe, Lauren, Murray, Evie, Catherine, Sophie, Sam and Charlie.

There were 11 teams playing in the finals. We played in quite a few matches – we won two of them and only lost the other matches by one or two goals. This meant that we were placed tenth overall, but we were pleased with this result because we had all tried really hard. Mrs Latham told us that there were 201 schools in the whole county, so that makes Great Wilbraham 10th out of 201 – which is great!

We were all given a medal at the end, therefore everybody went home pleasedwith their day!

Pluto Reward Time

On Thursday 24th March Pluto class filled their Good Carpet Rules Goody Jar and decided to take a trip to the woods and the park. We used this time to look for mini-beasts as part of our Growing topic. The children really enjoyed themselves and we found some woodlice, snails, ladybirds and spiders.

Pluto Messy maths

On Monday 21st March Pluto had some fun practicing their Problem Solving, Reasoning and Numeracy. They made shapes using dried pasta, counting with spaghetti hoops and shaving foam. They had lots of fun getting messy whilst sloving problems.
